ROC Hengelo (2008)
Commissioned by: Kunst en Bedrijf Location: ROC Hengelo Materials: iron, electric motor, chain, electronic, foam, sticker Sizes: 5 (l) x 2 (h) x 1(d) meters Technical realisation: Jaap Hoogerdijk Technical support: Kamp & van GulikA new ROC (regional education center) building has been built in and around the former iron foundry of Stork Hengelo, the Netherlands. It is used by 4000 students. In the hall of the building two separate blocks of sea containers accomodate toilets. On top of each of them a work of art has been put: Flip clock and Music studio; thus the containers function as pedestals.
Flip clock
In the monumental foundry time is always present, literal and metaphorical. At the entrance of the hall the huge flip clock functions as a bridge between now and then. A symbol of the symbiosis between the old and the modern time. Like the foundry, the flipclock itself is as a factory. The mechanism of the chainwheel with iron frame refers to the traditional moulding which took place here. Time itself is shown by four huge foamboards with numbers which flip over as time goes by.
