DROPPING

Haarlemmermeer 2005
Commissioned by: Haarlemmermeer Council
Location: Haarlemmermeerpolder

"Dropping was a special combination of experiencing countryside, the 'Haarlemmermeerpolder', and art. The idea for the concept came from Hester Oerlemans in cooperation with the council. She drew inspiration from the vastness of the polder. The ever present air traffic played a major role in the plan. DROPPING broke up the daily flight pattern.
Five artists Jan Rothuizen, Jaap Kroneman, Gabriel Lester, Joep van Liefland and Oerlemans herself – dropped off their artworks over
the vast polder on the land of Jan Ham during the weekends of September. Every weekend the audience was confronted with an
other artist's idea. Each dropping was a unique experience."

Dropping Magritte

Imitation of the painting 'Golconde' by Magritte.
Golconde is a painting that shows men in black suits, with bowler hats and briefcases floating through or falling from the sky. A quiet and surrealistic image.
For the Dropping project 60 life size (inflatable PVC and screen print) men with bowler hats en black coats were dropped from the plane more or less simultaneously, creating a spatial translation of the painting.
